The club has completed its annual Open Grade 4 County Tour Tournament which was again sponsored by Morrisons Solicitors allowing us to give generous prize money for the Open Events.
Our coaches James and Adam once again performed Refereeing duties for the Tournament whilst Richard Skalsky our Junior Chair handled all the administration roles. Deborah Hamlin our Chairman coordinated the event.
We had 182 entries from 151 players covering 18 events and played over 240 matches over the seven days. This year we did not run the Open 50+ Men’s Singles event but introduced Men’s and Women’s Open Doubles events and ran a Satellite event for the QUORN Family Tennis Cup. We had good weather for most of the Tournament other than the Wednesday when it rained nonstop all day.
Play started most days at 10:00 am and continued throughout the day finishing up to 10:00 pm in the evening for the Open Singles Events. Throughout this time Sarah Pearson and her team of volunteer helpers manned the kitchen and kept us well fed throughout the Tournament. Also, Jason Endsleigh ran a very successful BBQ on Saturday’s Finals Day.
We kicked off the week with the QUORN Family Tennis Cup event on the Sunday followed by the U9/U10/U14/U18 events from Monday to Wednesday. We managed to play two U14 finals on the Wednesday through the rain before the heavy rain came at midday. Also, the Open Singles events started on Tuesday evening and continued throughout the week.
From Thursday to Saturday we ran the U12/U16 events where we had our largest number of entries for the Singles events. On Saturday, we had the Finals for the U12/U16 Singles events and theU8 Mixed Singles event. In conjunction with the Singles Finals we ran the Open Doubles events so all the courts were being used throughout the day and combined with a large crowd of spectators created a great atmosphere at the club.

There were a lot of good performances from our Club Players as can been seen from the results. Congratulations to Anna, Jack and Andrew for winning their Singles events. Special mention to Anya, even though losing in the U12 Girls Final, putting up a fierce resistance to her opponent which kept both the crowd and BBQ queue totally engrossed for over two hours.
We also had great result in all the Doubles events from our Club Players, so congratulations to Charlotte, Sofia, Jason, Graeme and Andy. Special mention for Graeme and Andy winning all their matches in the Open Men’s Doubles event including beating the higher rated number one seeds in the Final.
In attendance on Finals Day to help present the Trophies and Prizes were John Phillips (President Surrey LTA) and Mike Jackson (Marketing & Business Development Director at Morrisons Solicitors).
Thank you to all our club members in their understanding of the loss of court resources during the tournament. We tried where possible to maximise court resources and hope the inconvenience wasn’t too great. The Tournament once again generated a surplus in the region of £2,400 for the club.
Finally, a big thank you to the Tournament Team of Deborah, James, Adam and Richard who besides putting many hours into the planning of the Tournament put in shifts of 8:00 am – 11:00 pm on most Tournament days and to Sarah for keeping everyone well fed.
